More than fifty years ago the cast of Funky Winkerbean began their journey on the American comics pages, and as the official chaperone of these special characters, they took me with them as they traveled from the Tournament of Roses Parade to the White House. This is the 2nd installment in the series titled Fifty Years Before the Masthead where we look back at some of the more pivotal moments in the wonderful journey of Funky Winkerbean. For other looks back, please refer to the other posts in the in Fifty Years Before the Masthead series — feel free to take a look when you get a chance. Fifty Years Before the Masthead 1

In 1986 the character Lisa became pregnant while in high school. The response to those four short seminal weeks was greater than any I had received up to that point. There were so many requests for copies of that series that we put together a special booklet collecting the strips, Life’s Lessons Aren’t Always Learned in the Classroom, and sent out more than sixty thousand copies. When the requests continued to come in, we had to go back for a second printing.
The arrival of 1992 saw the Funky gang make comics history again by graduating from high school and jumping forward in time to their young adult lives.
