The shocker splash (again, house rules, my designation) is obviously trying to grab your attention with a horrific and totally unexpected scene. I’d say that the above scene qualifies on many levels. First with the act of a murder being committed which probably had Dr. Fredric Wertham of Seduction of the Innocent fame spinning in his grave, and, second, with the murder being committed by a hero which would send Wertham spinning counter clockwise. But, for better or worse, this is the sort of pandering you need to do these days if you want to arrest the eyeballs of a Dark Age comics reader.
