I got a call one day from Pizza Today magazine asking if it would be possible to collect the strips about Montoni’s Pizza that had run so far in the strip. Naturally I loved the idea and immediately set about putting together A Pizza Pilgrim’s Progress. It was only sold through the magazine thus making it one of the more rare Funky books. It’s a nice collection of the early tropes surrounding Montoni’s such as his many innovative but flawed marketing attempts, the first wedding reception held there and the rise of the video game playing Eliminator. I took the name from a pizzeria I frequented in college. Later, as Montoni’s would expand under Funky’s guidance, I would base the inside decor on Luigi’s, a pizza legend in Akron, Ohio.
