Flash Fridays – The Flash #331 March 1984

Sep 20, 2024

The story opens with the Flash trying to find his way out of the desolate and hostile dimension to which the evil gorilla Grodd had sent him at the end of the previous issue. Broken and with his uniform in tatters the Flash collapses to the ground. Just as he does, Grodd appears along with Angelo the young boy whose mind Grodd controls, and who Grodd used to lure the Flash to the alien dimension.

Grodd releases Angelo from his control and the boy runs off grief stricken over what he has done to the Flash. Meanwhile, Grodd is taking his time and toying with his long time foe as he prepares to finish him off with a blast of his super mental energy. However, he toys a little too long and the Flash with his last reserve of energy spins Grodd around so that he’s struck down by his own powerful mental blast.

At this point, Angelo shows up with Solovar, the leader of Gorilla City, and Solovar uses a transport to to send everyone there to the City. Once there, Solovar sends Angelo off in a flier flier to Central City. When the flier arrives there, it pass by a helicopter from which police captain Frye is distributing missing person leaflets over the city looking for the missing Barry Allen.

Back in Gorilla City the Flash and Solovar engage in some catching-up as the Flash explains the murder charge he’s facing. This is a relationship that has stood the test of time and it’s good to see those old friends together. I doubt that Silver Age scribe John Broome ever thought that Grodd, Solovar and Gorilla City would still be carried on more than two hundred issues later. As readers of this blog know, Grodd and Gorilla City were in the first Flash issue I ever owned, and it’s nice to see the series’ final writer (and twelve-year-old Flash Grams letter hack) Cary Bates giving a nod to another of the series long running Flash threads that have become an important part of the tapestry as he closes out the run of this saga (don’t worry, there’s a lot to go yet before we get there). It hits all the right notes as Solovar lets the Flash know that he’s there to help the Flash if he needs it. It borders on sweet.

Returning home, the Flash stops to save a sinking boat off the Florida coast, and while there he places a call to his lawyer Peter Farley from a pay phone (I wonder where the Flash keeps his change?) While he’s on the phone a bomb goes off in Peter’s office and the Flash takes off in a desperate attempt to save him. Stay tuned Flashinados!
