Jungle Comics

Apr 11, 2010

The Funky Sunday for Sunday, April 11, features another one of my comic book homages featuring a classic comic book cover cleverly integrated into the current story arc. Normally, these are comic books to which I have a personal connection, but, as we all know, these aren’t normal times. So as Funky shutters the doomed New York City Montoni’s franchise, we see in the background the cover to Jungle Comics #116 which I simply picked up at a convention a few years back. But the concept still works because ever since reading some of the Tarzan books in my youth, as well as watching Ramar and Sheena on TV, I’ve long harbored a desire to make it to the deepest, darkest heart the African jungle.

Which is what I finally got to do this past February when I journeyed to the deepest, darkest heart of, well, Tanzania actually, to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro (and you wonder why there aren’t more blog posts). If you look at the deep background silhouettes in this Sunday’s strip, you can make out a little monkey climbing along a branch. As I stood in the jungle and actually saw that scene, I knew that I had in some strange way I’d finally made it home. If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, then you probably wouldn’t understand.

Anyway, that’s the raison d’etre for using that particular cover. Which leaves us with the burning question in the inquiring minds out there… did he make it to the top? Check out the photo in the archive section.
