With a lot of trial and error, I had figured out how to transfer these powerful emotions I was dealing with to the comics page. However, readers can’t take that intensity on a daily basis, and I have the emails to prove it. If I only had a nickel for every email that began with “My dictionary defines comic as,” I would be the king of nickels. I’m not joking: the king. In fact, I had briefly toyed with the idea of simply turning this intro entirely over to the emails. A totally email intro might have been an interesting exercise. We’ll never know. Someone grab some smelling salts and let my poor, besieged editor know that we won’t have to be getting all of those permissions and that I’m sorry I even brought it up.
