Saluting America’s Band Directors – Sneak Peek 1

Sep 22, 2021

As Autumn begins, thoughts tend to drift towards the holidays… Halloween, Thanksgiving and New Years. Here in the Funkyverse, there’s a heightened degree of anticipation.

This year, or slightly next year on New Year’s Day, the Tournament of Roses Parade is going to feature a very special float and marching band. The unprecedented entry is a way to recognize the dedication and accomplishments of band directors everywhere. It will consist of a marching band almost 300 strong of actual band directors, and a float with a marching band theme devoted to band directors and their influence on the lives of their students. The entry is sponsored by the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation, which was created to carry on the work of the late Mike Sewell, who dedicated his life to the school and music programs in Pickerington, Ohio for more than 38 years. The parade entry showcases the important work that band directors do in not only teaching music, but in imparting important life skills to their students.

As a final component to the entry, it will feature three banners. The first one shown here celebrates Harry L. Dinkle and his fifty years as the world’s greatest band director! How cool is that? Very cool actually! I’ll be checking back in from time to time with updates and pix of the float under construction. Stay tuned (pun not intended… it happed all by itself).
