Super Summer

Jul 17, 2025

During this summer of Superman, the creators of Superman will finally be receiving their due in their own hometown. August 2nd will witness the unveiling of statues of Superman and his authors Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster in Superman Plaza in downtown Cleveland. As a youngster, finding out that Jerry and Joe actually came from my own stomping grounds was inspiring beyond belief. I think it was the first time that I began to entertain the thought that possibly/maybe/somehow I could become a cartoonist too. Hopefully Cleveland’s Superman statue will help inspire kids anew.

Their story is also a cautionary tale because the creators of a hero who fought for truth, justice and the American way, didn’t receive a lot of that justice in their own lives. One of the tragedies of the comics biz is the way that creators can be taken advantage of. It makes Cleveland’s finally honoring their achievement a very poignant moment as well.

If you want to learn more of Siegel and Schuster’s story, you can do no better than to read Super Boys by Brad Ricca. It’s the best telling of their story that I’ve found. And if you do read it, you’ll find the single best line ever written about Superman’s genesis. Trust me on this, you’ll know it when you read it.
