Time is longer than hopes and dreams. This is a poor copy of the first Mad Magazine I ever owned. I found that issue at the Rexall Drugstore a few blocks from my Grandmother’s house on Brown Street in Akron. It was a revelation that would influence my thinking and later my writing. One of the writers in that issue was Frank Jacobs, and down the road, one of the memorable moments in my career would be when Jacobs would drop me a note to tell me how much he liked a story in Crankshaft. When one of your heroes taps you on the shoulder to offer a kind word about your work… well, it doesn’t get any better.
August will mark the publication of the last Mad Magazine, after which it will join the ashes of the past.
